Madras medai
Basking in the success of Casteless Collective, his earlier initiative which was the first of its kind in Chennai and a fusion of various music forms from indie music composers and singers, director Pa. Ranjith is gearing up with another one. His Neelam Cultural Centre and Madras Recordings have initiated the new proposition.
Madras Recordings will once again bring seven independent bands of different styles from all over the country for a musical concert named Madras Medai to be performed in Chennai, which music buffs can enjoy free of cost. The seven performing bands are Paul Jacob feat, Chinna Ponnu, The Casteless Collective of Ro, Dopeadelicz feat, Dharavi United, Jatayu, Siennor and Othasevuru. The music genres include folk, gaana, blues, pop, hip-hop, jazz, big band orchestra, carnatic and electronic music.
Speaking about his initiative Pa.Ranjith said, "Cinema has a lot of restrictions to it. Creators should work in tandem with others to make something irrespective of his/her personal ideas. Contrary to them, independent musicians have a lot of freedom where they can express their thoughts about anything. But the topic matters here. My earlier music concert 'The Casteless Collective' was an attempt to check the reality. As expected, it received massive response and created huge debates and criticism”.
“A lot of unknown but talented independent musicians are participating. Many modern plays of art and literature are happening who celebrate it with pride and political understanding. But that doesn't come to our knowledge. I hope this 'Madras Medai' will bring these artistes to the spotlight and change the general perception on independent artistes. This concert will also break the myth that only cinema music is people's music,”.
