Onam for togetherness
The pretty actress was born in Kasaragod on the Kerala-Karnataka border and shuttles between her native place and other cities for her shoots, celebrates this year's Onam in Kochi at a relative's place.
“My best Onam years were the ones I celebrated in my grandma's house during my school days. She is no more now. Onam means togetherness. We will wait for the festival to arrive and gather at our grandma’s house much ahead of its commencement. Colourful Pookolams are the highlights of the festivity, besides a lavish Onam Sadya with 26 dishes. And the biggest task during the time is to separate the flowers according to their colours. We as friends and relatives used to go around and pluck flowers from our and neighbours’ gardens. And my mom always gives me the task of separating flowers and each time she assigns me with the task, I will be on top of the world as it was a proud moment.”
Mahima adds after a pause, “My paati was an expert cook and no one till today beats her expertise in Onam Sadya. She was amazing.”
How does she feel after turning an actress, we ask, “Basically, I am quiet person and love to spend my time with my family when I am not shooting. I don't put on makeup and will be in simple attire.”
After becoming a star, people do invite her as a chief guest during the festival events, the Kuttram 23 actress admits. “In the last few years, my school and college invited me to attend their Onam events and it was a proud feeling to share the stage with my gurus and mentors.”
The Onam festival may have become more commercial these days but Mahima says she cannot blame anyone as lifestyles of people have changed a lot. “Many travel and live in other states or country for their career needs. Hence they may not be able to go home. Many establishments and food joints offer special lunches. It may be good for those who are away from homes. Also, in a bid to show the spirit of festivity, they deck up nicely and upload photos on social media platforms to reach out to people. Luckily, somehow, I make it a point to celebrate Onam at my native Kasargod,” she signs off with a smile.
