The jokes are on Tamil cinema!
For those who relish taking digs at Tamil films and its stereotypes, for the fans of Tamizh Padam, and for those who are finished with the done-to-death commercial films, a show by theatre group DJ’s Ensomneacks might provide much-needed solace! Titled Tamil Cinema Atrocities, the 100-minute show will take on all the stereotypes and mundane facets of Tamil cinema.
All ardent fans of Kollywood can relate to it, assures the producer of the play and founder of Ensomneacks, Vikram Dhanasekar.
The Chennai-based theatre artist says, “The show is going to have a one-hour play, which will be followed by stand-up comedy acts of comics Karthi Durai and Jagan Krishnan — which will also be on the same lines as the play.”
“I am a cinema fanatic, and I love to watch a lot of Tamil movies. But the industry is focusing more on the commercial aspects of films and there is a dearth of realistic movies. I am a fan of commercial cinema; they are good entertainers.
But I guess there is a saturation point to that as well. So, I wanted to voice out my concern in a light-hearted way. That’s how Tamil Cinema Atrocities happened,” Vikram says.
The play is premiering for the first time, but Vikram’s close acquaintances who have seen the rehearsal have literally rolled on the floor laughing! “I don’t like to talk about my work and claim it to be great but I think people who follow Tamil cinema closely, will surely have a good time watching the play,” Vikram opines. DJ’s Ensomneacks will next take the play to other cities including Coimbatore in the coming days.
(The show will premiere on September 16 at Allaince Francaise of Madras,
4 pm and 7 pm)
