Theru Kootthu in focus
RS Karthik of Peechaangai fame has been roped in for a period film revolving around the dying folk art of Theru Kootthu. Manishajith will be seen playing opposite to him in the yet to be titled film. Set in 1980s, the movie is directed by Aathirai and a huge set resembling Koothu thiruvizha has been erected in Velliangudi village near Chidambaram where a major chunk of the scenes will be shot.
Speaking about the film, Aathirai says, “Koothu is the base for all kinds of performing arts. Cinema evolved from Koothu art. In olden days Koothu was performed regularly in all the villages, but in the current scenario it is on the verge of extinction. My film is a humble effort to revive the dying art form. The film will explore the life of one such artiste. Karthik has given a wonderful performance. Real life people whom I have met have inspired the characters in the film.” Marimuthu, Shivashankar Master, Nandita Jennifer and Thavasi play major roles.
