The new kid on the block
It’s the season of young music composers with a sound knowledge of music, who are emerging successfully in Tamil cinema. The latest one to join the list is Johan, grandson of popular sitar exponent Devarajan, and a product of AR Rahman’s KM Conservatory.
His upcoming Metro, which was mired in controversy, has garnered huge attention. “I have learnt Hindustani classical music, apart from harmonium and piano. Besides music, I thought technical knowledge is also important and hence took training in AR Rahman’s Institute and took a degree in sound engineering from a Swiss university before turning into an independent composer with the Vidarth starrer Aal,” Johan reveals.
He says that ace Bharathiraja gave him lot of motivation after watching the thriller Aal. “Sir watched the movie and asked me as which music school do I belong. I got scared whether anything had gone wrong. But he said, ‘music was very good and that’s why I asked’. I was relieved.”
Once again, Anand Krishna gave him chance for his second film Metro. “I have composed different genres for the songs in Metro.” There’s a song, which is an ode to motherhood, a gana song by Gana Bala sir are already popular. Presently Johan has Kurunila Mannan and two more movies in his kitty.
