Like father, like daughter
Shruti Haasan had a packed 2015, with a couple of misses, but many blockbusters. It could even be said that last year was the best one in her career.
In the city for an event recently, the young actress looked as gorgeous as ever! 2016 has gotten off to a great start, with an announcement that had everyone talking — seven years after her debut, the actress will finally be seen alongside her father Kamal in a yet-unnamed film. Why did it take so long? “As we have both mentioned earlier, more than the scripts not working out, we have both been extremely busy. Now we have meticulously planned to make time to work together. It’s an honour for me to work with my father and I’m hoping the audience will enjoy it,” says Shruti.
Her project with Kamal raises the number of announcements for this year to three — and it’s only February! Is there a lot of pressure? “Clearly you are more paranoid about my year than I am! I’m a hard worker and I believe in good work.
The rest is up to the audience and God and I’m very excited about all the work I’m doing,” she exclaims. She must be doing something right because it’s not just Indians that are looking her way. A recent Twitter post by Neil Gaiman was a surprise as the author declared that if he were to make a Bollywood musical, then Shruti would be in it! What a shock it was for us… “Anything is possible! I’m a great admirer of Neil Gaiman’s work since I was a kid. It’s a dream come true to even hear what he said and I absolutely love Amanda Palmer’s music as well and hope to meet them soon!” she says.
A tomboy at heart, Shruti reveals she had to work hard at becoming the ‘quintessential heroine’ — her rock, grunge nature is her true self. “I’m always like that at heart — acting is one thing, but being a heroine is almostlike another character. I mean, there’s the character you play, and then there’s the pre-conceived notion of what a heroine should be. That has been an interesting journey for me to adapt to, but ultimately it comes down to the art and craft. I have and always will be a geeky tomboy when the make-up comes off and the lights go down,” Shruti pipes.
While she may have spent Valentine’s Day with Kal Drogo from Game of Thrones, will we be hearing any wedding bells from her any time soon? “Find me an eligible man first!” she laughs. “Jokes apart, I have no plans of getting hitched at all. I’m very focused on my work and all the exciting things coming up!” she concludes.
