Wanting to be a good actor: Kaali Venkat
Kaali Venkat, who has acted in films like Maari, Thegidi, Theri, and more recently Iraivi, is quite kicked about Raja Manthiri, which is hitting screens this Friday. Directed by Usha Krishnan, a former associate of Suseenthiran, the rural-based flick revolves around the relationship between two brothers.
Kaali tells DC, “An out-and-out entertainer, this film will be on the lines of Chinna Thambi Periya Thambi and Thavamai Thavamirundhu. I play the elder brother and Kalaiarasan plays the younger one. Raja Manthiri is realistic and will strike the right chord with the audiences because the filmmaker has narrated some of the episodes of real incidents that happened in her life. I could also connect with the script on many levels.”
Now, with films like Dhanush’s Kodi, the Sibiraj-starrer Kattapaave Kanum, and Jai’s Enaku Vaaitha Adimaigal under his belt, it looks like Kaali has finally found the niche he’s been looking for! “I was doing a series of small roles initially and then got a big break with Vaayai Moodi Pesavum, Thadaiyara Thakka and Pizza 2. I am grateful to all those who helped me to be what I am today,” he smiles.
Kaali recalls how drama has always interested him since his early days. “I used to act in school plays in my village and finally, the day I decided that I should act in films, I came to Chennai and met director Vijay Prabakaran. Life has changed considerably to me these days, and everyone has started recognising me. Wherever I go, people also click photos with me,” he smiles.
Though he has been doing character roles and supporting roles, Kaali wants to do a full-fledged negative role like what Arvind Swami did in Thani Oruvan. He interrupts the conversation and says, “I know I am not fair and handsome like the Roja star. However, I want to do something that suits me. I also want to clarify that I am not interested in becoming a full-time lead actor. I love essaying realistic characters, so that they let me to delve deep and create an impact onscreen.”
What’s next? “I’m both excited and nervous about these releases, and I’m hoping that the films will go a long way towards establishing my career,” he concludes.
