Ace filmmaker Bala’s assistant Nandhan turns independent with a film titled Mayuran, with an intriguing theme of drug trafficking taking place in men’s college hostels. It brings to the fore that students from Northeast like Manipur, Tripura, Meghalaya, Assam are predominantly involved in it.

“I have taken the knot from my own campus hostel life and fictionalised it. It is an action thriller against a backdrop of illegal activities happening in a college hostel. A guy from the hostel goes missing one night. How the hero played by Anjan Dev investigates his missing friend and the startling things he comes across in the process forms the crux.”

The non-liner pattern of screenplay is said to be the highlight of the film. Ashmitha, a graduate from National School of Drama who has acted in Bengali films, is debuting as the heroine.

What traits have you learnt from Bala, we ask. “No one can beat Bala sir in detailing and accuracy in his narration. I at least want to follow that and if I have achieved or not is for you to say after watching the film.”

Vela Ramamurthy will be seen in a character with grey shades. Balaji Radhakrishnan from Koothu-p-pattari plays the missing boy. Sashi from Jharkhand is introduced in a key role.
