Editor V Don Bosco turns director

The editor-turned director shares his journey and the reason for shifting fields.

Editor V Don Bosco, who made his debut in Sasikumar’s Sundarapandian, earned a name for himself in the industry as an editor, working on many films, including Idhu Kathirvelan Kadhal. Now, akin to other other editors in the southern film industries, Don Bosco has turned director for an untitled film! The editor-turned director shares his journey and the reason for shifting fields.

“I started off as a graphic designer, and at my workplace where I got to learn about editing — I made my first short film Help. The film garnered a lot of recognition for me, and I landed up with the opportunity to edit Drums Sivamani’s album. Then I went on to work in dozens of TV dramas for all the leading Tamil channels, and I got acquainted with SR Prabhakaran sir there. When he made his film with Sasi Kumar, he gave me the chance to edit the film. But all through my journey, my passion for directing has always been there,” he starts.

Talking about his directorial venture, he says, “The genre of the film will be something similar to the likes of Chennai 28, Madhayanai Kootam, and Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu, but will have a different treatment. I am confident — I will not fail in this attempt.” When asked if his editing stills will come in handy for direction, he affirms, “Since I know editing, I will know how to reduce the number of shots while shooting a film. So, instead of taking ten shots, I can reduce it even three or four. Also, even if an actor is unavailable, an editor will know how to shoot witout that actor and still not spoil the continuity!”
