Actresses support Nayanthara, male stars silent

The controversy between both actors over the documentary Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale has sparked a wave of reactions in the film industry. While several female actors have publicly shown their solidarity with Nayanthara, symbolically as well as otherwise, male actors, including Vijay Sethupathi, have chosen to stay silent.

Actor Parvathy, who shared the screen with Dhanush in Maryan, commented with a ‘salute’ emoji on Nayanthara’s post, before sharing it on her Instagram story. Others like Shruti Haasan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, as well as Aishwarya Rajesh Nazriya Fahadh, Anupama Parameswaran, Dia Mirza, singer Shilpa Rao as well as producer Ektaa Kapoor expressed their support with Nayanthara, by liking her post, which went viral in a few minutes.
The latest to join in was actor Janhvi Kapoor, who shared a still of the documentary writing, “Nothing more inspiring than watching a strong woman be a strong woman,” adding a red heart emoji to the same.
“This is what empowerment is when women support women, especially in an industry which is patriarchal and steeped in misogyny. Men like these often feel they can arm-twist women, but this sisterhood will go a long way in proving otherwise,” says a female actor not wanting to be named. “For a female actor to stand up against these pillars of power takes a lot of strength. They are branded as trouble makers”, she further adds.

On the other hand several male actors including Vijay Sethupathi, who starred Naanum Rowdy Dhaan has maintained a diplomatic silence on the issue.
Nayanthara who is popularly to as Tamil cinema’s Lady Superstar was sent a legal notice by Dhanush to pay `10 crore in damages for using a ten-second clip from his film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, in the documentary. Ironically this was the film when romance had blossomed between Nayanthara and her husband Vignesh Shivan. Nayanthara posted an open letter accusing him of harbouring “vengeance” and a “personal grudge” over her and her partner Vignesh Shivan.
Though Dhanush’s team has asked her take down her letter, Nayanthara remains underdetered as she promotes her latest Rakkayie, with a telling caption when a woman is provoked she doesn’t flee but declares war.
