Clash over copyright: Dhanush's lawyer asks Nayanthara to remove content in 24 hrs

The ongoing dispute between actors Nayanthara and Dhanush over alleged copyright infringement has intensified, with Dhanush's lawyer issuing a legal notice demanding the removal of disputed content from Netflix’s documentary Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale within 24 hours.

The controversy centers around a three-second behind-the-scenes clip from the 2015 film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, produced by Dhanush, that was featured in the Netflix docuseries. In the notice, Dhanush’s legal team stated, “Advise your client to take down the content infringing my client’s copyright over the film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan. Failure to do so within 24 hours will compel my client to initiate appropriate legal action, including claiming damages of ₹10 crore against your client and Netflix India.”

The dispute escalated after Nayanthara posted an open letter accusing Dhanush of hitting “an all-time low” by seeking compensation over a minor clip. In response, Dhanush's lawyer rejected her claims, asserting that the clip was not personal footage but belonged to the production team.

"My client is the producer of the film and is fully aware of the expenses incurred for its production," the statement read. It further challenged Nayanthara to provide proof that the footage in question was not authorized by the production team.

The legal notice has also implicated Netflix and Nayanthara’s husband, filmmaker Vignesh Shivan, who directed Naanum Rowdy Dhaan. Both parties have been warned of legal action and damages if the content is not removed promptly.

The dispute has sparked widespread attention, with fans and industry insiders taking sides. While Nayanthara’s open letter criticized Dhanush’s move as unfair and unnecessary, the actor’s legal team maintains that the rights to the footage were violated.

The next steps in the legal battle remain to be seen, but the controversy has highlighted the complex copyright issues surrounding creative works and their use in derivative content like documentaries.
