Mammad Bhai is an engaging tale about a soft-hearted gangster: Vineet Kumar

Veteran actor Vineet Kumar, National School of Drama alumina has left an impression on Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Bhojpuri cinema as well as on television. He has also starred in Hollywood films including 'Return to Rajapur' and 'Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain.'

Having worked across multiple languages and formats, Vineet who narrates Saadat Hasan Manto's short story 'Mammad Bhai' in Zee Theatre's literary anthology 'Koi Baat Chale' , believes in the power of multilingual content. The teleplay will be available on Tata Play Theatre on 19th May. Talking about the Telugu and Kannada translations of 'Mammad Bhai', he says, "This is an engaging tale about a gangster and will definitely entertain Kannada and Telugu audiences. Generally, South-Indian films portray negative characters who appear very dangerous but possess a gentle, soft heart that compels them to help others. Mammad Bhai is quite similar because he has a menacing appearance, is a don, and yet has a softer side. He is everyone's friend. South Indian audiences are already familiar with such characters. Therefore, this story deserves to reach them."
Directed by Seema Pahwa, 'Mammad Bhai' revolves around a genial gangster who takes great pride in his moustache and his dagger till one day he has to give up both. Vineet believes Manto's story is timeless and relatable. He adds, "The story celebrates the basic essence of our country. Its beauty lies in the theme of shared humanity that transcends regional differences. While our customs and behaviors may vary geographically or culturally, the fundamental human experience remains the same."
About personifying Mammad Bhai's character, Vineet says, "I understand why the initial impression Mammad Bhai gives is intimidating because I share some of those characteristics. When I first meet someone, they might be intimidated. But as they get to know me, they realize I'm actually quite a soft person even though my appearance might seem imposing. That's why I connect so deeply with Mammad Bhai. I like him."
