Bhama speaks about her character Sara in Marupadi
There is satisfaction in Bhama’s words as she talks about Sara, her character in the upcoming Marupadi. A challenging character, as she calls it, Bhama is pretty sure that the movie and its characters would impress upon audience in some way. “You read about a lot of social issues these days. We would either talk about it or put a post on social media and then forget it. Atrocities only increase with time. I am sure that Marupadi would influence people in some manner and make them think,” she says.
“It is a powerful script,” says the pretty actress. The movie, which is based on some real-life incidents, was shot in Kolkata, Wayanad, Kozhikode, and Kannur. According to Bhama, Sara is one of the best characters she has done so far. “Sara is above my age. I play three stages in her life — life before marriage, motherhood and an aged woman. The offer came to me through Venu chettan (cameraman Venugopal) with whom I have worked before. The character was promising. Also, it is a V.M. Vinu movie. I have always wanted to work with him.” In the beginning, Bhama was not sure if she could project the character well. “It was because I have a child-like face. I doubted if I could bring the depth of the character well. However, the team was supportive. Vinu chettan knows how to mould an actor.”
What makes Bhama happier is that the movie speaks from a female perspective. “Julaina chechi (scriptwriter) has handled the character in a different way. In movies, many a time we have to deliver dialogues that are not in tune with women’s psyche. But, I didn’t feel like that when I rendered Julaina’s dialogues. She has beautifully captured women’s thoughts.” Acting with Rahman was also a great experience. “I knew him only through his movies. We became friends on the sets,” says Bhama, who is now shooting for a Kannada film Raga.
