Lucky Locks
As a kid, Deepa Esther, an anchor-turned-actor, disliked her curly, messy hair. She seldom realised that it was her hair that made her distinct. But now she believes that her hair was the best thing that happened to her. If it hadn’t been curly, she wouldn't have been offered with a role in the upcoming movie James and Alice. An excited Deepa narrates how her hair turned a blessing in disguise for her.
“That day, I was just back from the sets of my Joshi Thomas movie. In the evening, I got a call from my friend who told me about James and Alice team’s search for a girl with curly hair. I was a little hesitant to take up the offer just for hair. I had no idea about the movie as well as the character. However, he assured me that the character would be good and next morning, I was in the location. That was one moment I realised the worth of the uniqueness of my hair.”
In James and Alice, Deepa plays a sidekick of Prithviraj. “The movie is set in two times. I come as one of his allies in one situation where he plays the role of an artist,” says Deepa, who had a great time working with Prithviraj. “He is very professional. It was very comfortable acting alongside him,” she adds.
Hailing from the television scenario, she had no camera fright. “Dialogue delivery too was fine for me.”
Deepa’s first movie was Mahaprabhu, which is yet to be released. Later, she acted in two other films. “In Mahaprabhu, I did a negative character. The next movie Aisha was a psycho-thriller. Now, I am acting in two movies — a campus story by Joshi Thomas and a bilingual movie, which is done in Tamil and Telugu,” says Deepa.
“It is my first attempt in Tamil and Telugu. I could manage Tamil, but Telugu was very tough. But I believe that if we have a passion for something, nothing could hinder it,” adds Deepa, who wishes to carry both anchoring and acting simultaneously.
Right now, she does a cookery show Food on Road in Kairali We channel and Youth Diary, a programme for youngsters. She is also an emcee. Quiz her on her anchoring role model, she replies, “Ranjini Haridas. No matter what people think and talk about her, I admire the way she handles the show and the crowd.”
