Listen to Delna
The last time Malayalis saw Delna Davis on screen was in Happy Wedding as Lakshmi, the girl whom the hero falls for after which she rejects him. Before that, she was seen in You Too Brutus romancing Anu Mohan’s character and later dumping him. Since then, there has been no news of her in Mollywood. But across the border, in Tamil Nadu, things are different. Delna has so far done six movies there. Her latest, Kurangu Bommai starring Vidharth and veteran director Bharathiraja, received wide critical acclaim.
Asked why she isn’t seen around in Malayalam, this Thrissurkari lets out a laugh. “It’s not that I don’t get offers. I do get a lot of offers, even from huge banners, but most of them are of theppukari roles. Once a gold digger, always a gold digger. I do not want to be typecast. I am waiting for the right role in Malayalam.” Kurangu Bommai directed by debutant Nithilan Swaminathan was noted for its thrilling pace, non-linear narration and its mind-blowing climax. What made her choose the movie? “There are three factors – the script, Vidharth and of course, Bharathiraja!,” she replies. “Acting opposite a star like Vidharth whom I deeply admire was one factor that attracted me. And the script was so fascinating. When Nithilan narrated it, I was very excited. Also, if he could convince a person like Bharathiraja sir to act in his first movie, it would be a golden opportunity. I didn’t want to miss it.”
Another Tamil movie will happen by December end and if all things go well, a Malayalam movie too. Talks are on with a team from Tollywood. “Nothing has been finalised yet,” she clarifies. Among all these busy schedules, Delna is pursuing her post-graduation in English Literature at a college in Koratty, that too as a regular student. “The college is very strict about attendance. So I regularly attend the classes and shootings are scheduled over the weekends. So, career doesn’t affect studies or vice-versa,” she says with a smile. Delna doesn’t want to stay on the big screen alone. “I am fine with mini screen as well. I just want to stay in the hearts of the audience through some memorable characters, be it lead roles or smaller ones. All that matters is quality of performance,” she concludes.
