Sweet success

Dinoy Paulose, co-writer and actor of Thanneer Mathan Dinangal, is a happy man as he has finally realised his Mollywood dream.

Matha Jet is the fastest private bus in the all of Gothuruth town. And, there is only one guy who can chase down the bus — Joyson. Those who have watched Thanner Mathan Dinangal would not have forgotten Joyson’s extraordinary achievement of bearing with the troubles created by his younger brother Jaison.

Enacted by Dinoy Paulose, Joyson is one of the most pleasing characters Malayalam cinema has introduced recently.

“I have been chasing my dream of cinema since school days. I wanted to be an actor, but writing came my way. Director of Thanneer Mathan…(Girish) is a friend. Once, he happened to see my post where I wrote the thread for a short film. He asked me to develop it, and later he directed that as the short film Vishudha Ambrose. That’s how our bond started. After that, I wrote more than two scripts hoping for a ticket to the tinsel town. Thanneer Mathan... was one among them. We decided to work on a feature film inspired from the great feedback our shortfilm had received. The rest of the story is as sweet as Thanneermathan,” laughs Dinoy.

School stories are not new in Mollywood and it takes a lot of effort to get audience applause. Dinoy, who is also the co-writer of the movie, recalled many examples that inspired him to frame the story and the character. “We wanted to make it simple and relatable,” he says. “Those days, our discussions revolved around making the film avoiding dramatic sequences and unrealistic dialogues. I don’t think, in real life, children will talk the way they are portrayed in most movies. And that was the key to its success,” he points out.

Quiz him about the challenges faced while writing each character, Dinoy says, “To think like children of that age was a challenge. But since I was not working and would spend more time attending public gatherings and on playgrounds just like the character Joyson, I could be in touch with a lot of young friends. I have many friends who are very young compared to my peers’ friends. Interacting with them helped in moulding the characters. Their colloquial way of conversation was developed so. It is very different from how we used to talk during our school days. So, it was difficult, but my little friends made the task less hazardous.”

While playing a character which was his own creation, Dinoy had no excitement at first. But towards the middle of filming, Dinoy started to feel wonderful. “Initially, I went with the flow. But then it struck me what I was doing: I wrote a script with Girish, started filming it and now playing one of the main characters in it. That moment was special. And seeing me on the big screen, my mother and brother were too excited and more importantly, I could prove a lot of people wrong. I proved that all these years’ efforts were not in vain. It was a great feeling and I am happy.”

He has already completed some writing and would like to continue working on them as some of his friends are interested in working with him. But, Dinoy says his ultimate dream is to act. He would like to play more roles in the future.
