Actor going great guns
Three years ago came a film that changed the life of young actor Roshan Basheer and propelled his career into a trajectory that was all the way up. The Mohanlal-Meena starrer Drishyam proved to be the launch pad for Roshan’s entry into other languages. He was a part of the Tamil Papanasam and Telugu Drushyam, which are the remakes of the film where he reprised his character. He suddenly became the blue-eyed boy (though his eyes are actually green) in those industries and he had to take a sabbatical from Mollywood.
The light-eyed actor who acted with Vijay in Bairavaa will now be seen in his fifth Tamil film July 16, which has him and Ajmal in the lead. He explains more.
“The film is based on a true story and I got this role after the makers saw my acting in Bairavaa. This is based on a true story and is a crime thriller so I cannot say too much about my role.”
Meanwhile, he has also signed on his third Telugu film, the shoot of which will commence in January. The film is about four characters and is a road movie with a large part of the shoot happening abroad. Having worked in three industries and completed films in Tamil and Telugu, he is qualified enough to speak about the difference between the industries. He says, “Telugu is a huge industry with mega budgets and the makers spend a lot on a film’s promotion. Malayalam, though a smaller industry, comes up with realistic scripts.”
Asked about the reason for not working in Mollywood, he candidly replies, “I was offered the same college kind of roles but I have been working out and have grown out of those roles. Moreover, the roles that came to me did not excite me and I am still waiting for the right offer.”
But the actor has something exciting lined up for him in Kerala — in fact, it is the culmination of a long-cherished dream.
Roshan reveals, “I am a part of the Celebrity Cricket League. And this has been the culmination of years of effort.” How so? Roshan thanks actor Bala for the opportunity and explains, “Right from 2012, I have been trying to get a place in the CCL. I attended the selection camp twice but was not selected and finally I decided to do something – I started playing cricket daily. I got a cricket coach and practiced diligently for almost 300 days out of 365 days and finally this year, all that hard work has paid off. I am a part of the camp!” he ends on a happy note.
Not many know that Roshan is a hardcore cricket buff who travels all over India to see the matches of his favourite cricketers.
