After all the drama and din of a slew of loud ventures, high on heroism, comes a silent killer which partially leaves the audience ‘speechless’. However, there is no dearth of noise in the background score of Mercury that still manages to keep one awake for two hours, albeit in dead silence.
The element of Mercury, we must admit is apt and the filmmaker, to some extent, has used this sensibly. The plot revolves around a group of deaf-mute high school friends celebrating the birthday of the only girl in the group. Each one of them is connected in some manner to the outcome of a poisonous mercury gas incident at a factory that killed several in the past.
If one were to glance at the film posters carefully, you can see actor Prabhu Deva, screaming his lungs out —another dead give away on what is in store for the audience. At his best with a ‘killer’ performance, his act of revenge and mannerisms remind one of those intelligent dinosaurs from the Hollywood movie Jurassic Park.
For all those who still Remember What Happened Last Summer, and similar revenge sagas from Hollywood, Mercury is quite impressive in its meaningful content set in an apt backdrop, with crisp film making webbed around a rather challenging situation, mentally and otherwise — Imagine a cat and mouse situation of a group of deaf-mute friends being hunted down by a visually impaired person?
An accident leads to a twist, and eventually to the intended place of action. There are few impressive moments, many that emit yawns for its predictability. This silent one will not go unheard thank to its ghostly tale.
