Aby movie review: Aby, a fight to flight
Cast: Vineeth Sreenivasan, Mareena Michael, Aju Varghese, Sudheer Karamana, Suraj Venjaramoodu.
Director: Srikant Murali
Expectations about Aby soared on seeing the trailers and songs in the film. While many were looking forward to an inspirational movie, one was curious how the makers would portray it on screen. The wait ended and the movie began after a long ‘thanks card’.
Aby’s story unfolds in a high range where he lives with his parents. He is a special child who dreams about flying. Even though his flying craze lands him and his parents into trouble all the time, Aby is determined to give wings to that dream. Everyone, except his mother, fails to understand his passion. For them, he is an eccentric person who behaves and dresses oddly. How Aby crosses all hurdles to make his dream is the crux of the movie.
Aby takes an emotional route initially. The way ‘little Aby’ is mistreated by others for clinging on to his passion could make the eyes moist. The writer has put in a lot of effort to understand the gestures and psyche of a special child. The child artiste who enacts the childhood of Aby deserves applause for keeping the audience hooked on in the first half.
However, the story seems to stray in the opening of the second half and the characters meander on the plot. Even though it regains momentum in the middle, the journey seems to be dragging with too many ‘obstacles’ that the viewer may feel like pushing Aby to somehow fly his aircraft.
The art department has tried to be innovative. For instance, they have tried converting an autorickshaw into an aeroplane. The greenery of the high range is soothing to the eyes.
When it comes to casting, Sudheer Karamana and Vineetha Koshy (Aby’s parents), Mareena Michael (Anumol, his love interest), Manish (an aircraft expert) Suraj Venjaramoodu (Anumol’s father) and Aju Varghese (Aby’s friend), keep the story going. Aju’s Kunjoottan will tickle your funny bone. Vineeth has done his best to portray Aby. However, the ‘little Aby’ steals the show. He would linger in your mind for his realistic portrayal.
