White movie review: White does not impress
Cast: Mammootty, Huma Qureshi, Shanker Ramakrishnan, Sidhique, K.P.A.C. Lalitha
Director: Uday Ananthan
Mammootty is an actor who presented many memorable characters in his four-decade long career. Whether those characters were placed against the rural or the urban backdrop, the brilliant actor in Mammootty could easily transform into that role and it was that power for transformation that made him one of the bankable artistes in Malayalam. But the recently released White fails to do justice to his otherwise glittering filmography.
The film, which is set against the backdrop of London, begins at Bengaluru where the heroine Roshni Menon (Huma Qureshi) works as an IT professional. She gets an overseas assignment and moves to London. It is there she meets Mammootty’s Prakash Roy, a multibillionaire. She finds him at a metro station in an inebriated state and saves him from a group of robbers. But that act changes her life and Prakash becomes a headache in her UK life. At one point they become friends and she becomes part of his ‘adventurous’ activities.
The first half of the film goes without making an impact on the audience. More than that, the majority of the scenes seems boring; especially, the last scene in the first half. The first quarter of the second half goes through an interesting track giving some interesting twists. But again the film returns to boredom.
Though the film has got an interesting one liner, the filmmaker failed to expand it into a good film and the weak screenplay did not help him, either. Gorgeous Huma, who made debut with this film, could present Roshni at an average level. The dubbing artiste who was roped in to lend voice for Huma has struggled a lot to follow the dialogue delivery pace of the non-Malayali actress. Shanker Ramakrishnan and Sidhique have, however, shown justice to their characters. When it comes to the hero, Mammootty should have gone for a second thought before signing this project.
Amarjeet Singh, who cranked the camera, could capture the beauty of the London streets while editor Achu Vijayan tried for a different edit-style. Though Rahul Raj tried to give a life for the film with his background, it was not enough to make this film a watchable product.
