D'SA-ound of title tracks!
When he croons, it’s hard not to be captivated by his enchanting voice. Singer Prajoth D’sa, who has entertained audiences with his singing, has now composed music for a Kannada film Amara Prema Kaavyam (APK). Ask him how the project happened and he reveals, “Back in 2015, I’d composed a song and done the background score for a short film called Kaarembo. That’s where Surya Tejasvi, director of APK heard the song Neenillade and wanted me to sing for his film. Later, when he realised that I was also the composer, he roped me in to create the title track and a father-daughter sequence song for APK. I also had to arrange music for the five existing tunes composed by Ganesh Bhagavath and create the background score.”
He admits that he was a little reluctant as the project was a feature film and wondered if he could pull it off. “But, I was happy as such opportunities don’t come easy. For the title track, I wanted to give a fresh, intense romantic touch with a super catchy chorus that would be remembered for long. With flutes and acoustic guitars, I wanted a perfect romantic ballad feel,” he says.
Coming to his background, the lad from Santhekatte, Udupi did his schooling in Milagres Institutions in Kallianpur and then went on to do Computer Science Engineering in Kundapur. He also juggles a full-time job as a software engineer along with his music. Prajoth, whose tryst with music happened when in primary school, says, “I was in the church choir and it instilled some music sense in me. I developed an interest in the nuances of Western music, harmonies etc. I then went on to learn the keyboard, dropped it after a few fundamental classes and began self-researching and learning it. I’m also a self-taught guitarist.”
A popular face on the Konkani music scene, Prajoth made his singing debut in his mother tongue for an album in 2010. “I was surprised to see people loving my voice. I kept getting more offers and till date, I’ve sung in around 100 Konkani albums. I’ve also crooned for Tulu movies, jingles and ads and produced my own Konkani album called Udi Udi which hit record-breaking sales,” he says.
Among the various accolades he’s garnered till date, the most recent one is at KIMA where he won in the Best Background score category. This man of many musical talents is also an avid YouTuber who managed to go viral with his A capella videos. As for his future projects, he shares, “The Kaarembo director has chosen me for his upcoming romantic film and two movie teams have gotten in touch for music direction. I’m also working on jingles, short films and my next Konkani album Udi Udi 2.”
