Sarah Farina is known for many things – her genre that she playfully calls ‘rainbowbass’, her fierce curls that gets people to call her the ‘cloud lady’ and her passion for collecting gifs and memes.
But above all, she loves spreading good vibes, through her floor-popping DJ sets or silly cat gifs, something that she collects with a vengeance. The energy that spills as a result is what gets her going, culminating in a colourful, connected and energetic genre that she’s thrilled to share with all of us in Delhi, Pune and Bengaluru.
“This is my first time in India and I’ve only heard good things! My friends who’ve been here before have loved it and I hope to get to know the music scene and explore the cities as much as I can,” says Sarah.
Brought up near the Alps in Germany, on the border of Austria, she still vividly remembers her Sunday mornings when her parents listened to artistes like The Cure, Sade and Bob Marley, something that she can find only few words to describe – one of them being magical.
After a short stint at a music academy in Berlin, Sarah dropped out. “I simply felt uncomfortable,” she confesses, taking off on her own and learning at every chance she could get, either from her friends who come from unique music backgrounds or genre history from books, documentaries and the goldmine called the Internet.
Now known as the Bass Queen of Berlin, Sarah is the talk of the town for being Berlin’s main tastemakers in the underground bass scene and her fun, fearless genre-rejecting style.
“I go back and forth between halftime and doubletime and through a big BPM (beats per minute) and genre range to show it’s all one in the end. It’s a beautiful, positive thing for me. A mix of house, garage, grime, hip hop, jungle, juke, dancehall and the like is what I’d call rainbowbass,” she explains.
Her genre aptly reflects where she comes from too. “Berlin’s music scene is always moving and I really like that. New people are moving to the city and adding new sounds and aspects to the music culture and Berlin has something to offer for everyone, I think,” says the DJ.
Her supportive parents were right about her loving music – Sarah has also started a non-commercial platform called Through My Speakers with her friends to create a space for like-minded artistes with a deep understanding for music, giving them the possibility to share their love for music!
Sarah might be lazy to do anything with her hair, but the same thing can’t be said about her music. After her Asia tour, she is looking forward to a studio session at the Red Bull music studios and is performing at a host of international festivals in Serbia, London, Germany and Italy. Until then, energies is all she has.
