On World Music Day, we highlight the rise of folk and new age fusion in contemporary music.
Ranjit Barot, a self-taught musician with a strong background in Indian classical music, discusses his personal journey and sources of inspiration. Music was an important part of his life from a young age, as he grew up listening to Indian classical and folk music in his household. Despite not having received formal training, Barot learned by observing and admiring his gurus, and his love of music has become second nature to him. He believes that being a musician is not the only aspect of his identity that defines him, but rather being a human being who serves others. Barot’s affinity for folk songs stems from his belief that folk music is the forerunner to classical music, with its raw and unrefined nature eventually evolving into a refined art form.
He expresses a desire to explore India’s diverse folk traditions, including regions such as Kashmir and the northeast, which have remained relatively unexplored for a variety of reasons. Barot’s vision is to restore the importance of Indian culture and music, particularly classical music, and to use music to reconnect with and preserve our cultural heritage.
“I see what kids are doing and making and I fall in love with them; my daughter is 27 and she is a singer; I tell her sometimes to give me her playlist so I can see what she is missing out on and we can connect; I believe there is only good music and bad music, as well as good food and bad food. So, I believe that good things are time-consuming rather than fashionable, so if you are relevant, the music you created is relevant,” he explained.
Similarly, Viveick Rajagopalan, the Ta Dhom Project's leader, has a unique perspective on folk and new age fusion. While their project isn't specifically about folk music, they do appreciate the beauty and storytelling aspects of folk songs.
Folk music resonates with them as it captures the essence of storytelling and leaves an indelible impression on listeners. They aim to create a fusion that transcends genres by incorporating diverse influences and inspirations in their performances.
The project explores the depth of collaboration, allowing different artists to learn from and inspire one another. By blending genres like hip-hop, rap, and classical music, Te Dhom Project crafts a unique musical experience.
The journey of creating music is as important to them as the final performance, and the bond between band members is critical. Their vision is to break free from genre constraints and expose themselves to a wide range of musical styles.
Inspired by folk song melodies and storytelling, Osho Jain, a young musician, believes that simplicity is the key to connecting with listeners. His songs are warm and relatable, and they touch people’s hearts. Jain’s vision is to keep making good music and experimenting with different styles without being concerned about immediate success. He emphasises the significance of remaining true to oneself and creating music that elicits genuine emotions. Jain’s collaboration with Coke Studio was a watershed moment for him, allowing him to showcase his talent and reach a larger audience. “Another really important thing about folk music is the melody. Once you hear a folk song, you will keep humming it the entire day and that’s the best part about it,” Jain said.
