Rakesh Maini may have finished as runner up in the fifth edition of Indian Idol, but there seems to be no stopping him now. The signer recently released his Punjabi single, Ankh Billori, alongside co-contestant Bhoomi Trivedi. We speak to Rakesh about some of his musical favourites:
One song you have on repeat on your iPod: The one song that is stuck in my head since many days is Channa Mereya from Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.
The soundtrack of your life would contain: Tumne Mujhe Dekha from Teesri Mansil. During Indian Idol, Ashaji (Bhosle) gave me a compliment and called me Chhote Mohammed Rafi sahab, and Rafiji is my idol. Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, for whenever I fall in love. Disco Deewaane because Sunidhi Chauhan is my favourite singer, and we perform this song together at every show. Saiyyan by Kailash Kher; it’s my all-time favourite and was on the top of my song list during auditions. Channa Mereya or Tum Hi Ho, since they’re both close to my heart.
Music you loved as a kid or a teenager, and you’re now embarrassed by when you think back: Arrey Ek Hai Anaar Yahan from the movie Dulaara. The song starred Govinda.
You would describe your taste in music as: I would say that my taste is best described by romantic music. When that is coupled with good lyrics, it touches your soul and your heart.
Your favourite time/way to listen to music during the day is:
I mainly listen to music while working out and travelling.
One band or musician that you would like to perform a private concert for you:
Well, my favourite band is Coldplay, and I really wish to watch them perform some of my favourite tracks of theirs.
One live act you would love to see at least once in your life: I wish I could’ve seen Michael Jackson live. It’s impossible for anyone to perform and sing perfectly at the same time, but he could do it so easily. I wish he was around. In fact, I’m so inspired by him that I even try to perform like him a bit on stage. He’s truly a real idol for me.
