Bengaluru: Masala' music from Pennsylvania
Bengaluru: Let’s be honest, two years ago after we found ourselves glued to the silver screen watching the Barden Bellas blow us away in the movie Pitch Perfect, each of us wanted to try our hand at A cappella. But before Hollywood glamourised this choral form of music, there was a south Asian A cappella group called Penn Masala, that was rocking the claps, the beat boxes, the clicks and the choreography. Formed in 1996 by students at the University of Pennsylvania, Penn Masala's music is a potpourri of eastern and western musical cultures.
‘Penn’ echoes their beloved university’s name and ‘Masala’ best describes the blend of Indian and American music that they strive to create. The Bengaluru show, which is the last leg of their Yuva multi city tour, is set to have timeless Bollywood tracks, mashed up with moody Coldplay ballads, EDM effects and elemental sounds. The group is performing as a part of the VR one celebrations on Saturday at 8pm at the Skydeck, VR Bengaluru, Whitefield.
