A milestone for music composer Sam

Music composer Sam C.S. completes a decade in Tamil cinema today (July 30)

The young composer quit his techie job for his passion of making music, and with Award-winning films like Vikram Vedha and Kaidhi, he consolidated his position in K’town.

Having been credited with scoring for the most number of movies for two consecutive years – 11 in 2018 and 9 in 2019 – a cheerful Sam talks to DC in an exclusive.

“I always prefer BGM to songs. You follow a certain standard template in songs, whereas the background score conveys the film’s emotions. And I always use live instruments for my compositions, which bring out the true essence of any sequence,” Sam says with a smile.

Talking about his multilingual upcoming project Rocketry – The Nambi Effect, directed and bankrolled by Madhavan, his eyes glow.

“It’s a special film for me. Madhavan Sir and I became friends post Vikram Vedha. He wanted to experiment with music since the film is a biopic of former ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan and made in English as well.

I spent time with Nambi Sir to get the real emotions and have translated it into music. Maddy also gave me a lot of freedom. Working for the film itself was a huge and mind-blowing experience,” says Sam.

He has a dozen films in his kitty, including VSP’s 800, a couple of Telugu films, including Mosagallu, and one with Ravi Teja.
