A melodious debut
Poetry and music go hand in hand. Both are meant to express emotions regarding a particular situation or to elaborate a thought. Poems become songs when music that defines the mood of the lyrics is blended into it. However, Pathinettu Vayasu, a song from the recently released movie Uyare, is different.
In the beginning, the song, which narrates the inhibitions of a girl regarding her life and how she finds success ultimately, feels like a poem narrated in a husky voice apt for the mood. But, it progresses to be a song with immense impact later on. Though it sounds as rendered by a seasoned singer with a honed voice, Pathinettu Vayasu marks the debut of Christakala, a B.A. Music student, in the Malayalam film industry. She has also been featured in the official video song.
Humbled by the responses she is receiving, the second-year degree student confesses that she is on cloud nine. “I have been inclined towards music since my childhood. It was the reason why I selected music as a specialisation for my formal education as well. Who doesn’t want to become the part of film industry and showcase his/her talent?” asks Christakala, who began her career singing chorus for Gopi Sunder. She has sung chorus for Ente Ummante Peru, Michael and Madhuraraja. “Though I dreamt of entering playback singing one day, I never imagined it would happen this early. I am extremely overwhelmed and thankful to Gopi Sunder for giving me this chance,” says a happy Christakala. She opines that Gopi Sunder is a perfectionist who is always in search of devising new concepts that can make each song sound and feel different. He never hesitates to give chance to a new face if he feels that it is worth it.
Asked about her preparations for singing a song with not-so-common approach, Christakala says that Gopi Sunder had a clear idea about how the song should be rendered. He had also recorded the song, which served as a perfect reference for the singer. “Moreover, Gopi Sunder is one among those music directors who will very clearly narrate the sequence in the movie wherein the song will fit into. This gives the singer a clear picture of the mood the song is set in and therefore helps one give his/her the best,” says Christakala, adding that initially she didn’t know that the track that she had sung would be used in the movie.
The singer has been receiving numerous phone calls appreciating her work, which, according to her, has in turn made her more committed towards taking up singing as a career. She has been receiving other offers as well including one from popular music director Shaan Rahman.
