Grammy Winner Ricky Kej on Music, Environment, and Social Change

I sat down with Ricky Kej, the renowned music composer, environmentalist, and three-time Grammy Award winner. His passion for music and the environment was palpable as we began our conversation.

What inspired you to become an environmental advocate? I asked.
Ricky reflected, “I have always been an environmentalist and a musician. As I grew older, these two passions merged. Now, I use music to spread awareness about environmental issues and promote positive social change.”
His music, a blend of Carnatic and Hindustani influences, transcends genres. “I don’t limit myself to specific styles,” Ricky explained. “I focus on creating songs that evoke emotions, regardless of the genre. If a song requires a guitar, sitar, or symphony orchestra, I will use it.”
Ricky’s collaborations with Indian and international artists have been fruitful. “Working with Hindustani classical musicians and traditional artists from around the world has been incredible. They bring their unique skills and experiences to the table, elevating my compositions.”

When asked about balancing artistic integrity and commercial success, Ricky emphasized, “I make music for myself. I am a niche artist, not a pop artist trying to appeal to millions. My goal is to find people who appreciate my music.”
“I would rather be lesser known for songs that define me as a human being than be extremely well known for songs that don’t,” he reiterates.
To reach a broader audience, Ricky utilises social media and live concerts. “Live performances are the best way to connect with people and showcase my music.”
“Classical music and folk music need to be pushed, or else they will never reach a wider audience,” he says.
Ricky’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond his music. His initiative, “Rewear4Earth,” encourages people to rewear clothes to reduce waste. “The fast fashion industry is one of the most polluting. We need to change our mindset and make sustainable choices,” he asserts.
He proudly shared that he has worn some of his clothes over 70 times. “It’s not about being cheap; it’s about being responsible.”
“The most expensive clothes you will ever buy are the ones you never wear,” he adds.
Ricky also emphasized the importance of supporting classical and folk music. “Philanthropists and the government must invest in promoting these genres, so they reach a wider audience.”
The Grammy-winning Indian music composer and producer, has been mesmerizing audiences worldwide with his enchanting melodies and eclectic fusion of traditional and contemporary sounds. With a career spanning over two decades, Kej has established himself as a trailblazer in the music industry, pushing boundaries and defying conventions.
His subsequent collaborations with international artists further solidified his reputation as a versatile composer. “Working with artists from different cultures and genres has broadened my musical perspective,” Kej observes. “It’s enriching to learn from others and incorporate those influences into my work.”
Kej’s music often incorporates environmental and social themes, reflecting his deep commitment to activism. “As artists, we have a responsibility to raise awareness about pressing issues,” he asserts. “Music can inspire positive change and promote empathy.”
His album “Shanti Samsara” (World Peace) exemplifies this philosophy, featuring songs that advocate for peace, love, and unity. “Music has the power to heal and uplift,” Kej believes. “I strive to create music that spreads hope and positivity.”
Throughout his career, Kej has received numerous accolades, including multiple Grammy nominations, the US Billboard Music Award, and the prestigious Indian National Film Award. “Awards and recognition are humbling,” Kej acknowledges. “However, the true reward lies in creating music that touches people’s hearts.”
As Kej continues to push the boundaries of musical expression, he remains grounded in his roots. “My Indian heritage is integral to my compositional style,” he emphasizes. “I am proud to represent India on the global music stage.”
“Music is my purpose, my passion, and my life,” Kej reflects. “I am grateful for this incredible journey and look forward to the melodies yet to come,” he signs off.
