A song belongs to the music composer, says singer Geetha Madhuri
Geetha Madhuri, the singer known for the songs like ‘Na Kosam’ from ‘Magadheera’, ‘Jeevanadhi’ from ‘Baahubali’, has recently debuted as one of the judges for ‘Telugu Indian Idol 2’. Talking to ‘Deccan Chronicle’, she shared what she looks for in a candidate in the reality show and crucial issues like whom a song belongs to.
1) Congratulations on being a part of Telugu Indian Idol 2 as a judge. What made you take up this new role?
The opportunity. Initially, I was actually very nervous and I was doubtful of me being a judge on this show. Later when I was thinking about it and talked to my colleagues, I thought even for me this will be a level up in my career. Also, my opinion or judgment would change someone’s life and would give new opportunities to someone.
2) As a judge, what are you looking for in contestants?
Dynamics while singing. A sound wave has ups and down. A wave is always good when it has highs and lows. It does not look good if we have a straight line. So, I always look for waves when a singer is performing. It is called dynamics when it comes to musical terminology. I look for good dynamics.
3) In your opinion, how important are reality shows today?
Reality shows are very important in anyone’s career. It is a platform for new talent. We can prove our talent to the whole world through one reality show.
4) Can a rank outsider really become a professional singer by participating in such shows?
We know this and even I believe practice makes a man or woman perfect. Once you are part of a reality show you see a lot of talent and then you tend to practice more to compete with them. To be at par with them. So, this certainly leads to growth in your singing. I suggest, they (newcomers) can be a part of reality shows to see where they are standing.
5) You have worked a lot with M.M. Keeravani. He is internationally recognized today. What all have you picked from him as a music composer and how was the experience of working with him?
I am glad that our very own Keeravani sir today is worldwide famous. He is always a very warm and encouraging person to come across. He has encouraged a lot of singers and musicians. To be honest, he is a genius. I have learnt a lot under his music direction. I am extremely glad that the world knows about him now.
6) A singer is one of the persons responsible for a song. To whom does the song really belong? Singer? Composer? Lyricist?
The sailor (read captain) of the ship is the director. In the music industry also, there are singers, keyboard programmers, there are lyric writers but it is the music director who is going to take everyone and get them into one basket, and make it into a very good song. It’s a collective effort, It’s a teamwork. The main credit should always go to the music director because he is the one who is going to take the decision and tailor the song. According to me, it’s the music director’s baby. It’s the composer’s baby. Lyrics also play a very major role. And then the song is enhanced by the singer as he is going to present it. Finally, it is heard in a singer’s voice. But the credit has to be given to the music director, the lyricist, and the singer.
7) Who is your favorite singer and why?
Balu garu, Shreya Ghosal, and Sunita Garu. Recently, I have been a fan of Neeti Mohan, and Arijit Singh in Bollywood. In Telugu, it is Ram Miriyala, Mangli, and Sahithi Chaganti.
8) You have sung (1,800 songs) mostly in Telugu and Kannada, never in Hindi. Any specific reason?
I have recorded 1,800 songs of which 500 are for movies. I never got an opportunity to sing in Hindi. (Laughs). If I get a chance, I can try and prove myself.
The singing reality show, 'Telugu Indian Idol 2', on aha, kicked off in style with a unique singing marathon by the legendary teacher Guru Ramachari. The five-hour marathon was hosted by Ramachari and his Little Musicians academy singers.
