Same But Different: A New Look in Police Procedural Movies

From the past experience when the first trailer was shown to people of Gyaarah Gyaarah the movie, Several peoples reaction was there is known objectionable. “At this time we are bombarded with so many nicely literate police procedural television series,” she seems to concede. It is, however, a specialized conceptualization of the drama that drew her attention. In Gyaarah Gyaarah, a walkie-talkie is the key to understanding two different time periods in a world woven from fiction. An ordinary walkie-talkie that is linked to both a modern policeman and a policeman in the 90s distinguishes the story.

Kritika observes that, “This time travel, sci-fi angle hasn’t really been touched in Hindi cinema or web series before.” “It gives a completely new twist to a regular procedural,” she adds. “This notion that some information can be transacted over that long a stretch, that changes everything. There is a level of oddity in the show which was interesting to delve into.”

The World of Gyaarah Gyaarah

Rooted in the enchanting landscape of Dehradun and Mussoorie, Gyaarah Gyaarah is filled with legend and imagination. The series depicts the above earlier and later dates through tele-communication of sorts that takes place every night at eleven eleven and two walky talkies from different decades are connected for a few minutes.

Kritika notes that the world portrayed in the show is hard to imagine. “In our culture and, in our mythology, the questions…

Transforming into a Cop

Taking on the role of a police officer in Gyaarah Gyaarah was quite a new and interesting experience for Kritika. She explains that itself the dressing up in the military attire makes one a different person than she was during the photoshoots. "There's something about the uniform that changes you," she says. "You stand taller, walk straight, act with a purpose, and have responsibility. As actors, we worship uniform people, they are modern day websters for us. Images of uniformed people make us feel proud when we enact them on screen.”

Kritika also plays a character named Vamika Rawat, a character that is featured during both timelines. In the earlier timelines, Vamika is over enthused and joinees as a rookie cop but in the present timeline she is a commanding DSP. “It was like acting out two differential scenes,” she explains.

"The predicament was to recreate her in a way that she feels she is the same person within the fifteen years, with the concern more on behavioral changes rather than on physical ones."

A Complex, Multi-Layered Role

Kritika remembers the time when she pleaded with Raghav Juyal’s character for some details of the plot in one of the flashback scenes of the series. “It was indeed a complex, multi-layered sequence as well, which showcased the softer side of Vamika that has never been seen before. It simply means that the director was pleased with the result, and I felt I have given the character its due,” she said.

An Intense First Day on Set

The first day on the set of Gyaarah Gyaarah was not a walk in the park for Kritika, as it entailed an action scene where she is nearly choked, and it is quite physically demanding. “We planned that out, but it happened in the moment.” “My co-actor was very nice and interrogated me a lot with regards to my well being. They had a body double on standby, but I was determined to do it myself. At the end of the scene, the audience clapped for us, and that marked a very encouraging beginning to the shoot.”

Future Projects and Inspirations

In the near future, Kritika has come out with two new scripts which she is currently working on.

The shooting goes on for Matka King, which is produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur, directed by Nagraj Manjule and has Vijay Varma in the lead cast which is streaming on Amazon Prime Video. For this Series, she is also shooting for a Netflix show For Your Eyes Only, spy drama featuring Pratik Gandhi in the lead role, which is also produced by Kaiser H. Ahmad.

Kritika also replied to some questions saying that she liked Police procedural dramas a lot and there she mentions two serials One is Mindhunter and Baby Reindeer and a series Landscapers, which is rather a court crime drama. Coming to her, the list of the amazing women characters that they have come across includes Shabana Azmi in ‘Ijaazat’, Tabu in ‘Maqbool’ and anything that Olivia Colman does.

Even now, she is making steps forward in her career and in Gyaarah Gyaarah she has portrayed new appealing character. She continues her crucial hard work and even more, unafraid of brave transitions to other genres bring her to the frontline of the OTT’s.
