Rajamouli ditches two-part format for ‘ssmb29’
Feels that sequels have been misused by a lot of filmmakers for commercial gain
SS Rajamouli has decided to break away from tradition with his Mahesh Babu starter SSMB29. The original plan for a jungle odyssey, which also stars Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran, was to create a two-part series.
According to a source, Rajamouli, who introduced the two-part movie format with Baahubali, wishes to tackle SSMB29 differently. “He believes that many filmmakers have exploited the two-part format for commercial gain, overlooking storytelling and narrative. To prevent unnecessary stretching of the narrative, he has structured the screenplay as a single, gripping experience.” However, like his previous film RRR, SSMB29 will have an extensive runtime of over three hours. “Rajamouli has designed this film to hold the audience’s attention from the first frame to the last,” the source added. “Audiences are evolving, and no one has the bandwidth to wait for sequels unless it’s a film like Baahubali. It’s a sensible decision,” says an exhibitor.
