Siddhant Kaushal on Crafting Lyrics for Dhoom Dhaam and His Journey as a Songwriter

The lyricist behind Kill, Deva, Tumhari Sulu, and more shares insights into his creative process

Lyricist Siddhant Kaushal, known for his work in films like Kill, Deva, Tumhari Sulu, Bob Biswas, Drive, and Badla, has once again showcased his storytelling prowess with the upcoming film Dhoom Dhaam. Writing an entire album for a film is a rarity in today’s industry, but Siddhant embraced the challenge with ease, ensuring each song fit seamlessly into the narrative while standing out individually. Reflecting on his process, he shared, “I surrendered to the script and had fun creating the songs. For instance, in ‘How Are You,’ the line ‘Dil nervous-nervous dhadke ji, Lub-dub, Lub-dub karke ji’ was born from a casual conversation with Aditya Dhar, who told me that doctors describe the sound of a heartbeat as ‘Lub-Dub.’ That’s the beauty of a collaborative process—ideas emerge in the most unexpected ways.”

Beyond film soundtracks, Siddhant’s songwriting extends to independent singles and brand campaigns, each requiring a distinct creative approach. He explains, “A film song demands storytelling within 3-4 minutes, whereas an ad commercial requires the same essence to be captured in just 15 or 30 seconds. It’s both a creative and technical challenge.” His journey into lyric writing was unplanned—he initially moved to Mumbai to become a singer. “A friend once asked me to write dummy lyrics for a tune. I laughed at the idea, but eventually, I did it. A week later, the makers rejected my voice but loved the lyrics. That’s how my journey as a lyricist began,” he recalls. However, his background in singing continues to influence his writing, helping him understand phonetics, sound, and melody structure intuitively.

Having worked with legends like Amitabh Bachchan, KK, Arijit Singh, and Rekha Bhardwaj, Siddhant treasures each collaboration. A particularly touching moment for him was receiving a heartfelt voice note from Rekha Bhardwaj after he shared how a Vishal Bhardwaj song helped him cope with his father’s passing. “Her message felt like a warm hug,” he says. As he continues to create music that resonates with audiences, Siddhant remains dedicated to balancing poetic depth with relatability, ensuring that every song he writes leaves a lasting impact.
