Following the success of Orange on February 14, Telugu cinema is gearing up for a wave of re-releases, giving fans a nostalgic treat.
The beloved family drama Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu, starring Mahesh Babu and Venkatesh, is set to hit screens on March 7, followed by Karthi’s Yuganiki Okkadu on March 14.
Prabhas’ action-packed Salaar will be re-released on March 21, alongside Nag Ashwin’s cult favorite Yevade Subramanyam, featuring Nani and Vijay Deverakonda and also Balakrishna's sci-fi thriller Aditya 369 set to release during summer.
“No doubt, it’s a celebration time for fans, creating a festive atmosphere in theatres,” says producer Bandla Ganesh, who re-released Gabbar Singh starring Pawan Kalyan last November. “This trend is great for the industry, encouraging audiences to return to theatres instead of watching films on mobile devices and TVs. Big-ticket films have immense recall value, sparking discussions and renewed excitement among fans,” he adds.
Re-releases have already proven successful, with Mahesh Babu’s Businessman drawing massive crowds in August. Other blockbusters like Kushi, Simhadri, Dhookudu, Jalsa, and Chennakesava Reddy have also thrilled fans of Pawan Kalyan, Jr NTR, Balakrishna, and Mahesh Babu. “It’s not about the money,” Ganesh explains. “With Gabbar Singh, we shared collections with charities. The real goal is to create nostalgic moments for fans who cherished these films 10 to 15 years ago.”
However, director Teja offers a different perspective. “Maybe we’re not making good enough films these days, which is why fans are revisiting old classics,” he jokes. “But in all seriousness, the theatre experience is unmatched, and these re-releases prove that OTT hasn’t completely overtaken cinema. Exhibitors have even approached me about re-releasing Nijam with Mahesh Babu, and I’m considering it. Since producers regain full rights after five years, they’re free to explore such opportunities.”
With the resurgence of past hits on the big screen, it’s clear that the magic of cinema remains alive and well.
