More of the supernatural
Season 13 begins exactly where the viewers left off, with Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) left to deal with the loss of their mother, the demise of Crowley (Mark Sheppard) and the passing away of Castiel (Misha Collins). The birth of Jack (Alexander Calvert) leads the Winchester brothers to differ in their opinions on how to deal with a Nephilim.
After being pulled into the gap, Mary (Samantha Smith) must learn to survive Lucifer (Mark Pellegrino) and an apocalyptic world. Supernatural season 13 airs every Saturday at 11 PM on AXN.
Jensen Ackles aka Dean is in conversation with DC.
Q A number of iconic characters died in the shocking Season 12 finale. Where do we pick up the story of Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean in Season 13?
We pick up the story at the exact moment where we left Season 12. We pick up the story with Castiel (Misha Collins) at Dean’s feet. It’s interesting because Mom (Samantha A. Smith) is gone, Crowley (Mark Sheppard) just killed himself and Cas is lying dead on the floor. That’s too much for Dean to process, so he does the thing that he knows how to do best: he tried to neutralize the threat. There is a threat behind him, Lucifer’s son (Jack, played by Alexander Calvert), so he’s going to focus on that because that’s something he can hit.
Q What’s going through Dean’s mind at the start of the premiere episode?
Dean is in a bad place. There’s too much emotion. One of these characters dying would be one thing - but losing Mom, losing Cas and losing Crowley is way too much for him to handle. Everybody around him dropped, so he’s like, “I don’t know how to process this, but I do know how to punch someone in the face.” He’s going to do what he knows best, and that’s hit something hard. Luckily Sam stops him and tries to talk sense to him, but then there’s a bit of a struggle there.
Q Does this mean there will be tension between the Winchester brothers in Season 13?
It’s certainly not going back to seasons where they were really at odds. It’s more, “Let’s figure out how to handle the situation.” Sam wants to deal with it one way. Dean wants to deal with it another way. Basically, Dean immediately gets up to go take care of Jack. Sam intercepts and there’s a bit of a talk. He wants to keep him alive and close for various reasons, and Dean eventually acquiesces. He says, “Okay. However, if something goes sideways, I start shooting.” They’re not going to argue. They’re going to eventually get to the same place, but exactly how they get there is a little different.
Q Sam feels protective over Lucifer’s son, but Dean sounds like he’s the opposite of that. Does he feel threatened by Jack?
Yes, he does. Jack’s half Satan! Sam’s like, “Well, you know, he’s also half human, so maybe there’s a way that it could be nurture over nature.” Dean’s like, “No, let me shoot him in the face.” We’re going to see some interesting parenting skills this season.
Q Do you think your parenting skills will help you when it comes to portraying Dean this season?
I’m not sure the parenting of a half-devil spawn is going to be the same as taking care of a beautiful little baby - especially when the parents are trying to figure out a way to kill said baby. I don’t think it’s going to be like Three Men and a Baby here. Plus, there’s no baby. Jack grows pretty quickly, so that’s another issue. It’s going to be more like, “Keep your friends close; keep your enemies closer.” We’re going to want to keep this entity as close to us as possible so that if it does decide to hurt somebody, it’s going to hurt us. It will be more like jumping on a grenade than it is child rearing.
Q Does Dean have any regrets about Crowley?
Once he starts to realise the severity of the situation, Dean tries to reach out to God, who we all know is gone. But he figures he’ll take a stab at it. He’s like, “Bring Crowley back. Bring them all back.” Even though Crowley was obviously a bad guy with his own agenda, what he did was not something they ever expected to happen. Certainly, it was self-serving - but there was an ounce in there that maybe he gave a crap about them. I imagine there will be a slight bit of regret. A very slight bit.
Q What can you tease about the upcoming crossover episode with Scooby-Doo?
Everyone’s super excited about the Scooby-Doo episode. I haven’t seen it yet. The animators are still working on the animation for it, but we did all the voices for it and that was really cool. We’ve seen some renderings. I don’t want to give away too much, but there is a little live action at the beginning of the episode and that gets us into Scooby-land. I’m pretty stoked about it.
Q What was it like to record your voice for the animation?
When we did the voiceovers for the episode, you could feel the energy inside the recording booth. There was myself, Jared and Misha; we were all together in there. They put up a bunch of cameras, so you’ll actually be able to see what happened. I’m sure it will probably be a special feature on the DVD at some point. When you see it, you’ll notice how we were visibly vibrating with excitement from being there.
