Shoot @ site!

Tele-serials have always stuck to specially designed sets, and now there is a slow trend towards outdoor locations to add some zing to the making...

One of the major differences between a feature film and TV programmes including soaps, is definitely the making. While films are predominantly shot at outdoor locations, tele-ventures are mostly shot within the four walls with specially designed sets. However, the situation has changed in the recent past with TV moving some of it’s activities out into the open. Driven by competitiveness, there are a number of programmes and shows engaging in outdoor promotions, pundits feel. Bengaluru Chronicle reports on this shift in locations.

“First there were special broadcasts, then came recorded shows such as light music, debates and informative shows recorded in studios before telecasting movies once a week. Later, the concept of soaps and documentaries started making its way into television. It was mythological serials like Mahabharata and Ramayana which popularised television. Most of these epics were shot in a specially designed set unless the situation demanded an outdoor shoot. Ans this was mainly due to financial constraints,” says Ravi, a serial maker.

With multiple TV channels and direct to home facility making it easy for the audience to access all kinds of entertainment, the demand for qualitative shows has lead to a change,” says Subramanya, a television programmer. “Earlier outdoor units only catered to the film industry and they are now also busy with the small screen. In fact, the demand is on huge in recent times. However, shooting in a set or rented bungalow is preferred to cut down on the production task but with stiff competition, production houses are happy to pay the bills,” says Vasanth, a production manager.

A decade ago, Naveen, a film director, would watch his favourite serials with hardly any outdoor locations. “The majority of scenes were shot inside a house. There were a few favourite spots, and a few production houses rented big houses for serials. Even if the serial were to go outdoors for a shoot, they would show a road or at the most, an aerial shot of the location,” he adds.

Not just going beyond the four walls, TV has been also exploring serene location abroad. “However, a lot of drama still happens indoors though makers today find excuses to explore outdoor possibilities to give some depth to the making. But that time is not too far when serials will also challenge film making locations,” signs off Venkatesh, serial producer.
