Telugu audiences have once again dispelled the notion that they are star-struck and only watch star-studded movies. Again, they made a relatively small film ‘KA’ a big hit as it grossed more than Rs 16 cr plus and is still counting. The trend has boosted the confidence of young and brimming talent who are getting noticed and appreciated in Tollywood, where otherwise star-studded movies take center stage. “Tollywood needs young blood and success of small films is bound to give young actors and directors confidence to try out something different and refreshing,’ says producer Lagadapati Sridhar, while adding trade experts should count on their ‘gross’ collections and celebrate the rising footfalls at theatres. “You have to factor in gross collections for small films since they reflect the actual footfalls at theatres and raise hope for such novel ideas. No doubt, star-studded movies have their space, I wish more concept-based films put up a good show to compete with story-based movies from Malayalam," he said.
Earlier, small films like 'Mathu Vadalara 2', "Committee Kurrollu" and "Aay " rocked the box office and changed the game in Tollywood. "These four films would have garnered more than Rs 60 crores and raised the interest of distributors to invest in concept movies. In small movies, investment is less but profits three or four times,” he points out.
He believes that the success of new-age cinema will be a game changer and would encourage producers to bet money on novel themes over making cliched movies. "I think "Committee Kurrollu" was a complete emotional package touching on friendship, and caste reservations besides local politics. Similarly, "Aay" was also a heart-wrenching film that revolves around caste discrimination in smaller towns and it's quite relatable too. However, "Mathu Vadalara 2" was designed as a comic caper and meant to tickle the laughing bones of the viewers. It has a lot of energy but skipped a few logics. Audiences who were craving some fun rushed to theatres. While mystical elements and intriguing screenplay helped ‘KA’ to mint gold at the box office," he points out.
However, he gives some credit to veteran producers like Allu Arvind and Nagababu who guided the young team of their respective films. "I am glad that they are still able to judge novel plots and support them to the hilt. Mythri Movies also delivered a laugh riot and showed that they are game for new age cinema," he concludes.
