The Martial Artist Explores The Inner Struggles of People: Faran Tahir

In conversation with actor Faran Tahir about his upcoming film, The Martial Artist.

Why did you agree to play Ibby's grandfather in “The Martial Artist”?

My interest in playing Ibby’s grandfather was piqued because he is the catalyst in Ibby’s life that helps Ibby's spiritual center.

Can you discuss the significance of your character’s relationship with Ibby in the film?

Baba is the mirror Ibby needs to find his soul and his purpose in life.

How was your experience working with Shaz Khan, who also wrote and directed the film?

This film is very close to my heart. Shaz’s vision and creativity are unparalleled.

What do you think sets “The Martial Artist” apart from other films in the same genre?

There are numerous films that deal with the immigrant experience, but they usually focus on the rift between parents and children but seldom do we explore the inner struggle of people.

As a Pakistani-American actor in Hollywood, what challenges have you faced, and how do you see your heritage influencing your work?

It’s always a challenge to infuse the uniqueness of a character. Most times the characters are written with a general understanding of a culture but it is the actor’s job to lend the colors that make it into a vivid and relatable character.

Tell us about your future projects

I will be shooting a Marvel TV series in March and filming in Egypt. We have also set up a production house in Pakistan which will offer a full suite of entertainment.
