American rapper, songwriter and singer Raja Kumari is set to debut in Tollywood!
She recently crooned a peppy number for the upcoming film Devil, starring Kalynaram. The film’s director Abhishek Nama wanted her to do the playback in the song that has been lavishly shot in a specially constructed set.
Abhishek selected Raja Kumari since she is known for infusing Indian rhythms into rap songs, and is a significant voice of the hip-hop community.
“Iranian actress and model Elnaaz Norouzi is appearing in a special party song as a foreigner in the film. So we needed someone with an English accent to complement Elnaaz’s screen presence. I have been wanting to collaborate with Raja Kumari for a long time, given her global acclaim. What added to my excitement is that she’s a Telugu girl. When I realised there was an opportunity to collaborate with her for a party song in the film, I immediately approached her,” shares Abhishek.
Raja, who has been a part of the music scene for over a decade, was thrilled when she was approached, Abhishek says, adding that she had been waiting for an opportunity to sing in her mother tongue, Telugu. “She is good in Telugu; she liked the song and the lyrics when we sent her. We recorded the song in two days last month in Mumbai, and it’ll be a major highlight of the film. She is called the Indian Princess of rap for a reason,” says the director, adding that Raja Kumari’s voice complements Elnaz’s graceful dance moves.
