I want to surprise myself: Nani
Top box-office draw Nani will be playing an on-screen father in his upcoming film Hi Nanna. Asked if he had any apprehensions about donning a dad’s role again, the charming actor, who acted as the father of a 10-year-old son in Jersey, said “Why would I? As long as the character is convincing, and the story excites me, I’m game for it.” Pointing out that this is an era where people want to listen to stories that resonate with them and have interesting characters, he said, “I chose Hi Nanna because it’s a heart-warming story. Of late, we have been seeing masala stories, action dramas, etc., but a love story has been missing for a long time. This film would be an ideal box office draw.
Nani will be seen as the doting father of a seven-year-old girl Mahi (Kiara). He developed a lot of patience while working with kids on film sets. “If you are good with kids, it’s fun having them as co-stars,” he shares. “When I worked as Assistant Director (AD) too I was in-charge of kids and their dialogues for films, so I love to take responsibility for them. Kids make me excited too.”
A look at his filmography reveals his versatility. Is that how he wants to be known, we ask. “Having a great filmography is important, but what’s even more significant is playing characters that have lasting impact. Telling stories that can resonate with the audience takes us closer to them,” he replies.
Constantly reinventing themselves has become a great challenge as actors who want to surprise the audience. “I believe I am the audience while listening to the narration, and I want to surprise myself. I believe what excites and surprises me will also take the audience by surprise,” he reveals. “So when I hear the story, I watch the film in my head.”
An actor with unlimited dreams, Nani is always game to show the world what he has to offer. Although an outsider, over the years, he has carved his own legacy and inspired other newcomers through his work and passion.
His 15 years in the film industry taught him to be hungry for stronger roles.
“Every actor has ups and downs and I too had my share but I cherish both sides of the coin,” he says with a smile, adding, “it’s been a fulfilling journey.”
No one can take success for granted, especially in the film industry, as Nani knows better than many. When success eluded him, he waited patiently. “I did not give into the frustration and the situations taught me to believe in myself and my choice of films,” Nani asserts.
