Balakrishna Calls for More Films To Revive Telugu Cinema

Telugu Film Producers Council Honorary Secretary T. Prasanna Kumar revealed that Balakrishna believes top actors should ideally complete three to four films annually.

Nandamuri Balakrishna who is celebrating his 66th birthday has sparked an important debate in the Telugu film industry by urging leading stars to take up more projects every year instead of dedicating nearly 150 to 200 days to a single film. According to him, a higher volume of productions would not only benefit producers and distributors but also provide steady employment to thousands of workers and technicians who depend on the industry.

Telugu Film Producers Council Honorary Secretary T. Prasanna Kumar revealed that Balakrishna believes top actors should ideally complete three to four films annually. Drawing comparisons with the golden era of Telugu cinema, he noted that legends like N.T. Rama Rao and Krishna delivered an extraordinary number of releases every year. He cited examples such as Veera Brahmendra Swamy Charitra, Adavi Ramudu, and Dana Veera Soora Karna, which were completed in remarkably short spans despite the absence of modern visual effects and digital technology.

Balakrishna reportedly questioned why films now take two to three years to complete when today's technology allows instant monitoring and corrections on set. He argued that prolonged schedules are significantly increasing production costs, even though filmmaking tools have become more advanced and efficient.

Another producer backed Balakrishna’s views, pointing to escalating expenses associated with large-scale productions. He observed that producers often spend massive amounts on caravans, entourages, and other non-production-related expenditures, with only a fraction of that investment actually visible on screen.

Balakrishna’s comments have reignited discussions about production efficiency, escalating budgets, and whether the industry needs to rethink its current filmmaking model to ensure long-term sustainability.
