Bollywood divas offer fresh pairing, expand pan-India appeal
With new sensation Wamiqa Gabbi also arriving in Tollywood with ‘G2’ opposite Adivi Sesh, it looks like B-town divas are sought-after by Telugu filmmakers. She joins Deepika Padukone, Kiara Advani, Norah Fatehi, and Mrunal Thakur who are doing well in Telugu films. “Indeed, Bollywood actresses are headlining Telugu films these days, and they come as a breath of fresh air,” says producer Vishnu Vardhan Induri, who worked with Kangana Ranaut and Vidya Balan.
“It all depends on the massive scale and reach of their pet projects. A top-rung Hindi actress would be a big value addition if they are looking for a pan-India appeal. For instance, if I am watching a Malayalam film, I would watch it with more interest, if I find a familiar Telugu actor in it. Hence, Telugu filmmakers are signing up Hindi actresses to make North viewers own our movies. Their popularity is bound to give a fillip to our big-ticket movies,” he reasons.

Bollywood A-lister, Deepika Padukone swayed the Telugu audience with her performance in ‘Kalki 2898 AD, despite the presence of biggies like Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan. While her colleague Janhvi Kapoor will be romancing Ram Charan in his upcoming film after sharing space with Jr NTR in ‘Devara. “Janhvi Kapoor is the flavor of the season and created a lot of buzz. We roped in Janhvi since we felt she would be apt for this female lead role opposite a star like Ram Charan. Even director Buchi Babu felt the same since he had etched a significant female lead role. Above all, Ram Charan and Janvhi pairing would be a refreshing jodi on the big screen,’ says ace producer Ravi Shankar Yellamanchili
Giving a director’s perspective, director Hanu Raghuvapudi introduced B-town diva Mrunal Thakur in his Telugu blockbuster ‘Sita Ramam’ since he was looking for a girl who fit into the role of a princess. “I was looking for a gorgeous-looking girl who is also a good performer, so I found Mrunal Thakur ideal for the role. She matched strides with ace performer Dulquer Salmaan and proved my choice right with a sterling performance. I am quite happy that she is doing more Telugu films now,” he says and adds, "I worked with non-Telugu girls like Lavanya Tripathi and Mehreen Pirzada in my movies like ‘Andala Rakshasi’ and ‘Krishnagadi Veera Prema Gaadha’ respectively in the past."
