Glam divas eye comeback in Tollywood

Pretty diva Nidhi Agarwal's eyes a comeback as her look from her next film 'Hari Hara Veera Mallu' with superstar Pawan Kalyan was unveiled by the makers. She is also banking on another big ticket movie ‘The Rajasaab’ with Prabhas. Similarly, glam diva Trisha is returning to Tollywood with a megastar Chiranjeevi’s ‘Vishwambhara’ to regain a foothold. Ritu Varma who is doing a film with Sundeep Kishan, and Anjali went in for a makeover in her last release ‘Gangs of Godavari’. It looks like glam divas aiming for another stint in Tollywood after working in other language movies. “Honestly, it would be difficult for a few divas to have fresh stint in Tollywood since many new actresses have filled their spaces," says producer Lagadapati Sridhar who adds “Actresses below 28 years will have more chances while divas over 30-plus divas will have to work even harder because new actresses are offering competition.”

Earlier, actresses like Hansika Motwani, Avika Gor, and Anu Emmanuel also tried for a big comeback. Hansika had hits like ‘Desamaduru’ and ‘Dhenikaina Ready', while Avika Gor became a household name in Telugu states following hits like ‘Uyyalla Jumpala’ and ‘Lakshmi Raave Maa Intiki’. Although Anu Emmanuel shared screen space with big stars Allu Arjun (Naa Peru Surya.) and Naga Chaitanya (Shailaja Reddy Alludu) box office success eluded her. "Few glam divas tried to make a mark in Kollywood and Bollywood but had to return empty-handed. The adage of out of sight and out of mind definitely applies to some actresses since a new breed of actresses rose to fame in between,” says producer C Kalyan who reminds the meteoric rise of Rashmika, Sreeleela and Mrunal Thakur. "Making it difficult for comeback divas," he adds.

However, actresses like Shruti Haasan who returned to Telugu movies with ‘Krack’ proved her mettle and delivered two more hits ‘Veerasimha Reddy’ and ‘Waltair Veerayya '. "Shruti is selectively working with senior heroes and it is paying off well. She is on a hattrick in Telugu movies but such cases are quite an exception," adds Kalyanr.

However, hailing the comeback bid of actresses, director Teja says actresses have no expiry date and adds, "Actresses have the freedom to move around and expand their fan base. Actors don’t have an expiry date until they keep improving themselves. If they have learned something new from Bollywood or Kollywood filmmakers to enhance their acting skills, nothing wrong with it. Actresses have to look for greener pastures to extend their careers, so this comeback business is just a myth,” he concludes.
