Meenakshi Choudhury Joins Growing Trend of Women Cop Roles
After playing lover girl roles, young actress Meenakshi Choudhury essays the role of a cop in her upcoming film ‘Sankranthiki Vasthunam" and she invariably joins Kajal Agarwal, Tammanah and Keerthy Suresh who showcased their fiery side in films ‘Satyabhama’, ‘Akhri Sach’ and ‘Siren’ respectively. Even Payal Rajput and Lakshmi Manchu have donned khaki in films like ‘Rakshana’ and ‘Agninakshatram’. Nandita Swetha has become a sought-after actor for cop roles as she was seen in uniform in films like ‘Hidimba’, ‘Mangalavaram’ and ‘IPC 376. “Cop roles indeed beckon me,” she says and adds, “I chewed a paan and delivered cuss words in ‘Mangalavaram’ and I practiced hard with the writer and director on how to utter them in a particular way since the character was rooted in a tribal zone,” says the actress, who played a serious cop in other movies. “I played a tough cop in ‘IPC 376’ and ‘Hidimbha’. Some say that I fit into a khaki uniform with ease and also I carry it with some respect. I am happy about it. Playing a cop is a pride for an actor, since we see cops doing good things and punishing goons in real life, and emulating them on the big screen gives a kind of satisfaction,” she says with a glint of pride.
Producer C Kalyan says actresses undergo a lot of training and also shed weight to fit into the revered role, “Frankly it is not easy for every actor to don khakis. They have to shed their weight to fit into the khaki uniform. A police officer's role demands the right physique and attitude to impress the viewers. Good that more actresses are game for this challenging role, he added. He heaps praise on senior actress Vijayashanti who wowed the audience in her cop avatar in films like ‘Kartavyam’ and ‘Satruvu’. “She is again playing a cop in her upcoming film Kalyan Ram and she looked intense and committed,” he adds.
“Kajal Aggarwal played a tough cop and revived this trend of woman cop roles with ‘Satybhama’. It served as a boost shot for actresses to turn cops in Telugu cinema,” says Tikka Mohan, producer of ‘Satyabhama’ and adds, “Kajal went in for a complete makeover to don khakis and showcased fiery side in a subtle but impactful manner," he adds.
Another actress Payal Rajput who was seen in 'Rakshana, says, "Cop roles are mostly offered to male stars, but only a few offers reach actresses. I utilized that opportunity in Rakshana. It is always a challenge to don khakis and work from police stations. I also underwent training to get my punches and kicks right since cop stories are a serious business. Now cop roles are designed with varied shades to make them more relatable and humane," she concludes.
