‘Silk Smitha - Queen of the South’ to begin production
Work on the biopic to start in 2025
The authorised biopic of iconic South Indian actress Silk Smitha has been retitled Silk Smitha — Queen of the South, with production scheduled to begin in early 2025. The announcement came on December 2, marking the actress’ 64th birth anniversary.
While several films have drawn inspiration from Smitha’s life, including The Dirty Picture, Climax, and Silk Sakkath Hot, this project claims official status through collaboration with Smitha’s brother, Naga Vara Prasad.
STRI Cinemas’ Vijay Amirtharaj first announced the project last year under the title Silk Smitha — The Untold Story, with director Jayaram, a former assistant to Bijoy Nambiar, at the helm. Australian model-turned-actress Chandrika Ravi, noted for her resemblance to Smitha, was cast in the lead role. “We needed the whole year to do extensive research on the subject and have spoken to many people who are associated with Silk Smitha madam,” Jayaram tells DC. “It will portray Silk Smitha truthfully, focusing on her on-screen persona, providing insights into her personal life and the challenges she faced and will be a respectful tribute to the iconic actress.”
The team released a video of the project, which aims to chronicle Smitha’s journey as a prominent figure in 1980s and early 1990s.
