Telugu rights of Kanguva still open for distributors ?

No doubt, the promos and poster of ‘Kanguva’ have made a great impact on Suriya fans. The film aims to be a raw and rustic visual feast

Despite rumours that the rights of much-hyped Tamil movie ‘Kanguva’ have been sold, a leading Telugu distributor claims that Telugu rights are still open and happening. “No one has bought the Telugu rights yet although discussions are going on,” he says and adds, “Tamil makers are looking for fancy prices above Rs 22 crores and Telugu distributors are a bit hesitant,” he adds.

Despite Suriya’s warrior movie triggering curiosity around the film and set to be released in 34 languages, Telugu distributors are not in a hurry. “Telugu distributors are holding their horses despite the film creating ripples in the market with brilliant teasers and gripping trailers. Besides, Tamil makers are looking to sell the movie in 30-odd languages and it will take some time for them to begin discussions on selling the film in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana,” he adds.

He admits that 'Kanguva' is a different film and has generated a lot of hype for its new backdrop and Suriya’s new avatar. “Suriya is looking very different and he is bound to rock with his performance but his previous movies have failed to impress Telugu viewers,” he points out.

He claims Suriya's market expanded in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana after big hits like ‘Ghajini’, ‘Veedokkade’ and much bigger hit ‘Singham’. “Thereafter his films failed to set the box office on fire among Telugu viewers as films like ‘Seventh Sense’ and ‘Brothers’ couldn’t draw more eyeballs and gradually he lost his market,” he adds.

No doubt, the promos and poster of ‘Kanguva’ have made a great impact on Suriya fans. The film aims to be a raw and rustic visual feast. The scale of the movie is massive as the makers seem to have invested a lot on VFX and CGI. “Telugu rights could fetch them just Rs 12 crores but it would be risky, if they invest more in this action adventure,” he concludes.
