Vikram banks on Thangalan, to capture Telugu market?

Tamil star Vikram is hopeful of regaining Telugu market with his upcoming film ‘Thangalan’ and believes that his new look and concept would enthrall Telugu viewers. “After many flops, Vikram is returning with ‘Thangalan’ since Telugu audiences patronize path-breaking movies and also appreciate Tamil stars who work on their bodies and come up with new avatars,” says a distributor. He claims Vikram’s last release ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ was an average grosser in the two Telugu states. “Vikram received appreciation for his princely role but too many heroes and subplots didn’t strike a chord with Telugu viewers and it didn’t turn out to be a blockbuster unlike in Tamil Nadu,” he adds.

No doubt, the national award winning actor had superhits in Telugu states and wowed audiences with his scintillating performance in films like ‘Aparachitudu’ and ‘Sivaputrudu’ and became a household name among Telugu viewers. “His multiple shades in ‘Aparachitudu’ fascinated Telugu viewers who made the biggest winner for Vikram in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Even his other film ‘I’ with director Shankar had few takers but he later shifted to performance-oriented movies like ‘Nanna’ and won critical acclaim and slid down the box office barometer in Telugu states,’ he points out.
With Tamil stars like Rajnikanth, Vijay and Suriya regaining their Telugu market after few flops, Vikram would have some hope since he is returning with an action adventure set in Kolar Gold Fields and his fight with Britishers in the period sage has all the trapping of a commercial cinema. "Vikram has the best chance this Independence Day, “ he concludes.
