Warner Bros. Acquires Rights to Tahereh Mafi’s Bestselling Series Shatter Me

Tahereh Mafi confirmed on Instagram that Warner Bros had acquired the rights to her dystopian fantasy book series “Shatter Me”.

On June 16, author Tahereh Mafi confirmed on Instagram that Warner Bros had acquired the rights to her dystopian fantasy book series - Shatter Me for a film adaptation. This announcement lines up with the 15th anniversary of the bestselling franchise.

The book follows the story of 17-year-old Juliette Ferrars, who is locked up in an asylum for her lethal touch that has the ability to kill anyone who comes in contact with her skin. When the totalitarian regime called “The Reestablishment” decides to use her as a weapon, she must choose whether to comply or to fight back.

Published in 2011, the series saw a colossal wave of popularity on BookTok, with over 15 million copies sold in 38 different territories. It went on to garner a massive fanbase as the series expanded over the years.

#ShatterMe is trending on all social media platforms as fans celebrate the announcement of a film adaptation. However, a vocal portion of the fanbase is skeptical that the film adaptation might not do justice to the layered characters and vast story of the books.

Mafi acknowledges the fanbase, stating her commitment to the project: “It’s always been tremendously important to me that any adaptation brings the story to life in a way that honors the fans who love these books and characters – and I really think we have the chance to make something great with this team.”

The team of producers for the film includes Temple Hill’s Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen, Sunswept Entertainment’s Karen Rosenfelt and Langley Park Pictures’ Kevin McCormick. Mafi will be an executive producer for the project, promising the fans that she “will be advocating for them always”.

Young-adult dystopia was one of the most trending genres of the 2010s, when The Hunger Games, Divergent, and The Maze Runner trilogies took mainstream cinema by storm. The industry has not witnessed a major dystopian adaptation since then, so bringing Shatter Me back into the scene is a potential opportunity to revive the genre’s bygone momentum.

Given that the series has boasted a towering following on social media and Mafi continues to extend it, the franchise has flourished in building a dedicated audience. Whether the film converts this into a box office hit remains to be seen.
