Where is the logic in Rajamouli’s movies, asks Karan Johar

While discussing the impact of belief in filmmaking, he referenced SS Rajamouli’s work, noting that while his films may not always adhere to logic, they thrive on sheer conviction

Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar recently spoke about the role of conviction in storytelling during an interview with Komal Nahata on his YouTube show, Game Changers. While discussing the impact of belief in filmmaking, he referenced SS Rajamouli’s work, noting that while his films may not always adhere to logic, they thrive on sheer conviction.

When asked what takes precedence when logic is set aside in cinema, Karan responded, “Conviction is key. If you analyze the journey of top filmmakers, you’ll find that the biggest hits are rooted in belief. Logic doesn’t always matter in a film. Take Rajamouli sir’s movies, for example—where is the logic? You don’t see it. What you do see is conviction. And when conviction leads, the audience follows.”
He further elaborated, “Look at the biggest blockbusters—whether it’s Animal, RRR, or Gadar. These films are made with conviction. If you can take down a thousand people with a single hand pump, that’s conviction. Anil Sharma believed in Sunny Deol’s strength, and that belief translated onto the screen. I think every filmmaker should have this ingrained in their DNA. The problem arises when you start doubting yourself, overanalyzing audience expectations, and focusing too much on logic.”
Meanwhile, Karan Johar is preparing for the release of his next production, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, directed by Shashank Khaitan and starring Varun Dhawan, Janhvi Kapoor, Sanya Malhotra, and Rohit Saraf. The romantic drama is set to hit theaters on April 18, 2025.
