You used to sing a lullaby to yourself to sleep, says Daboo Malik about Armaan Malik

Mumbai: In the seventh episode of Vi Presents, “Be a Parent, Yaar! Season 2” by Yuvaa, songwriter and producer Armaan Malik sat down with his father, veteran music composer- director Daboo Malik.

Following the success of Nikhil Taneja’s “Be A Man, Yaar!”, the seventh episode of Vi Presents, "Be A Parent, Yaar!" by Yuvaa is all set to offer viewers a unique glimpse with a candid and raw conversation between Armaan Malik and his father Daboo Malik giving a rare insight into their personal experiences, professional paths, and the deep, heartfelt bond between father and son singer duo.

The chat show began with a nostalgic discussion where Daboo talked about one of his favourite childhood memories of Armaan saying, “When you were just born and in my arms, you’ll not believe me, the next day or the third day you never cried but the constant that happened after that a 15 day child making soulful voices, you used to sing a lullaby to yourself to sleep.” As the episode went on, it depicted an unbreakable demonstration of the father-son relationship - a bond that transcends traditional dynamics where sons usually feel hesitant, but with them it was all about love and respect. Their conversation was not just a personal narrative but also about broader perspectives on individual journeys, how they managed their familial relationships, and what it takes to keep going on.

As they exchanged thoughts and sang a few of each other’s songs, Armaan opened up about when and how he fell in love with music, saying, “I fell in love with music when I was in Berklee College of Music, all the years when I did playback singing, I was not in love with music and singing then. At 13, I picked up the guitar, started playing it, running all the chords and learned how to write a song. When I went to Berklee, I met musicians from all around the world, that’s when I fell in love with music.”

Daboo also opened up about his childhood, where he was a part of a play at the age of 12 and was only tasked to make the noises of a goat hidden under a white cloth, whereas he wanted to play the main character, and his mother was quite furious about it, but it made him learn the lesson to never stay afraid or hide any talent.

Answering Daboo’s question about whether he had done a good job as a father, Armaan expressed, “I don’t think I could have had a better parents than you and mom because everything I am today is because of you guys. The way I am wired, the way I am sensitive, the way I am angry or happy is all of it has come from you guys, and I wouldn’t change a thing about it. I feel you both have very different parenting styles. With you, dad, you’re a scared parent, very protective, but you also let the child decide what they want to do and fail, because you are fearful of failure for yourself but never for us. But you’ve been a great father!”

Wrapping up their heartwarming chat, Armaan described his experience of the conversation, saying, “I don’t think I’ve conversed with my dad so much in my whole life as much as we’ve done in the last few hours. There were indeed some interesting things that we talked about, and I feel like I know my father way better now than I used to before." Whereas Daboo was truly grateful for the experience, saying, “I also feel that in the process of the show I forgot that we were actually shooting or there is a show because I think we both connected and something transpired, and this will be a lifetime footprint for me always.”
