Ex-BRS MLA Aamer detained at Hyderabad airport
Authorities allowed him to proceed to Bodhan for his mother's last rites. It is expected that Shakil will remain in custody as investigations into the pending cases continue.
NIZAMABAD: Former BRS MLA Mohammad Shakil Aamer was detained by police at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport on Thursday upon his return from Dubai, where he had been staying for 15 months. Shakil, who arrived following the death of his 77-year-old mother, Shagufta Adeeb, was questioned by immigration and police officials, and his passport was seized.
Authorities allowed him to proceed to Bodhan for his mother's last rites. It is expected that Shakil will remain in custody as investigations into the pending cases continue.
Shakil, BRS MLA for Bodhan from 2014 until 2023, had been residing in Dubai since his electoral defeat and the change in government. His wife, Ayesha Fathima, oversees BRS activities in Bodhan.
Earlier, a look-out notice had been issued against Shakil in connection with a road accident case at Praja Bhavan in Hyderabad, in which his son Raheel was implicated. Authorities allege that Shakil threatened police officials and tried to remove evidence related to the incident.
In addition, Shakil faces charges of involvement in substantial default in custom milling rice (CMR), with the disputed amount running into crores of rupees concerning rice mills owned by his family in Nizamabad district.
Shakil’s mother, Shagufta Adeeb, a retired headmistress of Government Girls High School in Shakkarnagar, Bodhan, had earned a good reputation as an academic during her career from 1965 to 2005. Following her demise, BRS leaders and local dignitaries expressed their grief and extended condolences to the bereaved family.
Shagufta Adeeb's last rites were conducted in Aneesanagar, Achanpally on Thursday. Former Nizamabad urban BRS MLA Bigala Ganesh Gupta was seen accompanying Shakil during the rituals.
